The Story of The Shadow Pinball Machine
Step into the shoes of a vintage superhero
New York by night, sometime in the 1930s. Fog. Cold. Shadows lingering on the Brooklyn Bridge. Suddenly, a mysterious voice whispers in your ear:
“I’ll be there, around every corner, in every room, as inevitable as your guilty conscience.”
Welcome to the world of The Shadow
You don’t need to know the film to feel like a pulp-era superhero for three full balls: playing this pinball machine is the experience. Seen the movie? Then you can’t help but admire how brilliantly the designers brought The Shadow to life.
From the 1930s art-deco artwork to the theatrical soundtrack and the clever mechanical tricks, this machine pulls you straight into a fantasy world where you are the hero.
Innovations that make The Shadow pinball truly unique
Technically speaking, The Shadow is one of the most creative pinball machines ever built. Its feature set sits right up there with the legendary Twilight Zone — a mix of clever engineering and pure “how on earth did they build this?” brilliance.
Two Phurba diverters on the ramps. With the extra buttons on the cabinet you decide exactly where the ball goes. Think you can nail the 7-Way Combo?
The Battlefield, a fast-paced mini arena with a motorized kicker that wakes up every reflex you have.
The Sanctum, the spot where the ball suddenly freezes in the middle of the playfield before being launched, almost magically, straight into the lock. One of the best “what just happened?!” moments in all of pinball.
The Shadow: Brian Eddy’s first and boldest design
For The Shadow, Brian Eddy, who would later create the all-time classics Attack from Mars and Medieval Madness, stepped into the lead designer role for the very first time. And what he delivered was so innovative it’s almost audacious.
Bally even managed to get Penelope Ann Miller, John Lone and Tim Curry behind the microphone. Your enemies actually taunt you during gameplay, while your allies cheer you on, pulling you even deeper into the story.
Final Battle: the climax of The Shadow pinball
The Shadow pulls you deeper into its world with every shot you make:
In six gripping story scenes, you’ll be dodging Tibetan daggers and putting the ever-annoying Farley Claymore in his place.
Sanctum Multiball, Hotel Monolith Multiball and Khan Multiball — three deliciously chaotic multiballs, each with their own rules and challenges.
Master all the scenes, the multiballs and the Battlefield? Then everything builds toward the Final Battle: a frantic five-ball multiball where you finally get the chance to defeat your nemesis, Shiwan Khan. Your heart will still be thumping long after the last shot drains.
And somewhere deep in the game code hides the infamous Secret Laughing Mode. Think you can find it?
